SEO tutorials for beginners

Link building is the SEO practice of obtaining links from external web sites to your own to improve both direct referrals ie. people clicking on the links and search engine ranking. Link building is all about increasing your site link popularity.
Web site Crawler will go to a site again and again whose ranking in Search Engine is high. You can verify this fact by putting your site on a high rank site. If your site link is available on a high rank web site then you have 99.99% chances that you site will be indexed with-in 24Hrs.

How to increase Link Popularity ?

There are various ways of increasing your web site link popularity. I'm listing out some important tips which are easily doable.
  • Submit your site in popular search engines manually. Don't go for automated submission.
  • Get your site listed in Open Directory Projects like dmog.org, yahoo.com. Getting listed in these directories will give your site a boost in link popularity and improve search engine ranking in other search engines.
  • Provide high quality content - people will naturally link to your site if you have what they want and no where is available.
  • Leverage your personal relationsrelations with other webmasters. Put your site link on their sites. One way links often count for more than reciprocal links.
  • Participate in Link Exchange Program. Find top 20 sites doing the same business and contact them for reciprocal links. Link exchange between unrelated sites might affect the ranking of websites in the Search Engine.
  • If you are subscribed in a forum and forum does not have any restriction to keep your site link as your signature then it can help you to increase your site popularity.
  • Submit your site to bookmark sites like DIGG, and Slashdot etc. Before submitting please go through their spam policy.
  • Write good articles in blogging sites and give few references of your links with-in that article.
  • Keep providing good content to your site visitors. Try to keep them busy on your site. If possible create forums, news letters, blogs etc.
There are other ways but you need to spend some dollars to go for such alternative.
  • Buy a place on high rank website where you can put your link.
  • Subscribe for google's Adwords program to drive traffic towards your site.
  • You can go for alternative advertising option to increase the number of hits on your site which will result in your site link popularity.

Basic SEO Tips for Any New Website

Once I’ve created and launched a new website I look to promote it online using various SEO techniques. These techniques generally stay the same no matter what type of website I launch – be it a blog, business site or brochure site. Today I’d like to share with you my top ten tips to follow after launching a new site; hopefully these will help new developers and act as a nice reminder for those more experienced.
seo1 550x412 Ten Basic SEO Tips for Any New Website
Backlinks are an essential building block to help your site and some of the methods below will help you gain those valuable backlinks, other methods will help spread the word about your site, help you inform search engines your site exists and help you track backlinks, errors and search queries.

Basic SEO for a New Website:

Be it BlogSpot, WordPress, Static Website or any other platform, when you are launching a new Website, there are few basic SEO techniques, which goes for every type. These SEO tips, should be followed by everyone, and if you have question regarding any of these tips, feel free to ask me via comments.
Before, we move ahead here are few articles worth reading:
Create and submit sitemap
Sitemaps help search engines discover all the content on your site, essential for new and old websites alike. You should ensure your sitemap conforms to the sitemap protocol and there are many free and paid for website and software companies that can automatically create a Sitemap for you. If you are using WordPress, you can use Google XML sitemap plugin to create sitemap for you new WordPress site.
Webmaster’s tools
Google, Bing and Yahoo all have webmaster sections for you to log in and tell them about your site. Once you have confirmed you’re the site owner you can submit your sitemap you made above, view details of sites linking in to you, top keywords and any errors they find when crawling your site.
Blog Commenting
Make your comments useful, not spammy as this will only waste your time when the editor deletes it. Comment on blogs relevant to your website and hopefully they’ll allow you a backlink. If not at least you are spreading word about your site to the relevant readers and you never know, they might have websites and add a link to you.
Social Bookmarking
Another useful way to spread word about your site and hopefully gain valuable links back is to take advantage of social bookmarking. Add pages (not just your homepage) from your site to some of the top bookmarking sites such as; Delicious, Digg and StumbleUpon. It also useful if each page or blog post from your site offers readers the chance to share your site to their bookmarking account. Consider adding share buttons or a toolbar such as those offered by addthis.com to your pages.
Twitter
Build up a good following of relevant businesses, clients and those in related industries and the benefits can be huge. Post useful tweets and occasionally throw in articles, news, or blog posts from your site with a link back to them. Don’t just jump right in for sell, sell, sell or you’re liable to put off followers. Add a tweetmeme.com button or similar to your pages too.
Facebook
This site has over 500 million members so adding a page on here is a must. Add Facebook like buttons to your website too so that visitors can share your pages with their friends. We have a good number of articles, related to Facebook marketing for a new website. Here are few links, which will help you to get started:
Exchange links
Most webmasters are happy to link to good quality, relevant websites so try contacting a few direct. When gaining links always link to sub-pages or folders, don’t just concentrate on your homepage. Looking for a good tip at finding sites that will link to you? Google “Add Link” followed by your website niche for a list of relevant sites that you can submit links to. Though 2 way link-exchange is a big no. Also after Penguin update, I highly recommend you to get backlinks from relevant niche. Here are few more resources, to help you build links for your new Website:
Submit a press release
Announce to the world you’ve launched, what you offer and why you do it best. Ensure it’s a good, well written press release and if necessary hire someone to write it for you. Then you need to get your release out there. The web has some good auto-submit press release sites that can often gain you links back but also consider local press, trade magazines or any publications concentrating on your niche. Do remember, Matt Cutts (Google Sposkesperson), recently added that Press release doesn’t give SEO advantage, but reports from SEO world shows that Press release still helps in search engine ranking.
Internet Directories
Submit your site to good quality internet directories such as DMOZ, Yahoo Directory, Business.com, Yellow Pages and Best of the Web. Some of these are paid and none offer guaranteed inclusion so ensure you meet all terms and conditions before submitting your site. Some directories are deemed to offer good quality backlinks so it could be well worth the initial investment.

How to Build Up a Clean Link Profile

Search engine optimization is not as easy today as it was before. With Google employing intelligent algorithms to filter and penalise bad links and potential spam, every webmaster’s top priority should now be to ensure that their website has a clean link profile. You definitely don’t want to be in danger of being de-indexed by Google, as a penalty for containing high-risk back-links. But you might ask yourself: where is exactly the line between a good and a bad link profile?
Would a couple of directory listings be able to kick your website out of Google’s index? Should you forever forget about commenting on forums, being afraid that it might hurt your rankings?
Absolutely, not.
Here are some tips that will help you get an objective evaluation of your link profile and enable you to improve it up to the point where it does what you expect it to: help your website achieve high rankings in SERPs.
What A good Website link profile is made up of?
The link profile of a website, consists of three things:
  • the type of links used in the website
  • the timeline (range of time) over which the links were added into the website
  • the words used to anchor the links (the anchor text)
Each component is equally important for determining the quality of your link profile and each can trigger a penalty from Google if mismanaged.

How to assess the quality of your link profile

To evaluate a website’s link profile, you would typically ask two questions: How many links does it have? and How much value are these links passing?
A both fast and efficient method to answer these two questions is to skip the one-by-one analysis of backlinks and look at proportions. Here is what I suggest:
The number of backlinks compared to the number of LRDs (Linking root domains)
Having an enormous number of backlinks to your website might sound like an advantage, but in reality that greatly depends on the number of LRDs your website has. For example, having tens of thousands of backlinks from just a couple of domains definitely looks like a sign of manipulation, agree? Therefore, I don’t recommend you to limit your analysis to raw metrics but to also correlate them to each other.
Backlinks compared to LRDs How to Build Up a Clean Link Profile and Increase Your Rankings
An even more in-depth backlink analysis consists of comparing the number of backlinks by source: from blogs, forums, directories, etc.
The backlinks distribution by authority
Although in a natural link profile, the links coming from domains with very high authority are considerable less than those from medium or low authority, the backlinks’ distribution by their authority should not be disproportional.
distribution of links by domain authority1 How to Build Up a Clean Link Profile and Increase Your Rankings
You should be aware that a link profile with a majority of low authority links will not only appear of poor quality to Google but might also attract a penalty.
The anchor text distribution
Beside the raw number of exact/partial/branded match backlinks, you might also want to monitor the relation between these metrics. For example, while the raw number of exact match backlinks is just a number, by looking at the ratio between exact match and branded links you will be able to get a reliable indicator of whether your link profile looks over optimized or not.

Exact match and branded ratio How to Build Up a Clean Link Profile and Increase Your Rankings

Quick tips for a steady Website Backlink profile

1. Always start with the best
When starting to build links for a new website, you might be tempted to go first for the easy links just to see them piling up and hoping that they’ll give your website a quick boost in rankings. But that might not be the best idea though. Just keep in mind that quality is always better than quantity, and you stay out of trouble.
2. Be patient
Aggressively building links for a site is the worst thing any webmaster could do for his website. Building massive amounts of links over a very short span of time results in Google detecting an “unnatural link behaviour”, qualify it as suspicious activity and penalize it. The best way to build up the links on the site is to do it gradually and consistently, over a period of time.
3. Avoid disproportions
When building links, you might find yourself focusing only on one method and ignoring the rest. But this results in achieving an unnatural link profile and increases the risk of Google detecting some sort of manipulation. Even in the case of a technique that has been proved to be effective and “safe”, such as guest blogging for example, if used massively, it can turn against you and do more damage than good.
Although it would take a lot of time to work on multiple link-building strategies, it would most definitely be well worth the wait.
4. Adjust to Hummingbird
Although the latest Google Hummingbird update does not have a direct impact on the techniques used for link building, it changes something even more important: the methodology for determining a website’s relevancy for a topic. And for link building, that means co-citation.
Make sure the backlinks you get are relevant for the topic of your pages, rather than anchor text optimized.
Conclusions
Certainly, the time of aggressive link building has passed. In fact, when it comes to vigorous techniques, each and every one of the SEO techniques is bound to be detected as suspicious or unnatural, if they are employed without discrimination. The thing that actually works is a combination of “safe” techniques employed with moderation, instead of going for a large-scale approach.
I would like to know what do you focus more when building links for your Website? Do you prefer quality over quantity or vice-versa? Do share your opinion and if you enjoyed reading this article, do consider sharing it on Facebook and Google plus.

Guest Blogging For Only Branding Purposes

Guest blogging is the attempt to outreach bloggers for eliciting a hopeful opportunity of article publication. There are so many benefits of guest blogging such as branding, exposure, readership, traffic and the controversial link building. But what exactly it is for? If we ask a few search engine optimizers, “What is the main intention of your guest blogging strategy?”. Probably most will answer for creating authoritative backlinks. Well, that is a good reason, but not an intelligent one.
If you have seriously got into the guest blogging profession mainly for link building, you should better alleviate it. SEO in the brand new 2014 & beyond is going to be harder than you would ever think. Therefore, guest blogging would be your main obstacle if you measure it as a quality link building tactic. Let’s explain why it would be.

Matt Cutts Statement: Guest Blogging For SEO Purposes is Dead

Matt Cutts wrote few guest blogging statements in the previous year. But none of them were helpful to understand if it is really effective or not. But in his final statement in 2014, he clarified that guest blogging for such seo purposes are dead. He made his post starting with it:
Okay, I’m calling it: if you’re using guest blogging as a way to gain links in 2014, you should probably stop. Why? Because over time it’s become a more and more spammy practice, and if you’re doing a lot of guest blogging then you’re hanging out with really bad company.
He was inspired to share the truth by a spammy email on his inbox. It is because of the extensive use of guest blogging for link building. Everyone wants to do guest blogging, but as a reward they want dofollow links at first. It is really a violence which is considered as paid links. Paid links had already been affected by Google’s previous algorithm updates. Similar types of paid links also have higher chances to get negative values. So, finally Matt Cutts revealed his thought for spammy guest posts:
So stick a fork in it: guest blogging is done; it’s just gotten too spammy.
Long live seo guest blogging..!!! I think it’s the end of guest blogging to gain links. There is no doubt that Google is going to take action against this type of attempts in upcoming updates. So, we should be sensible of these ineffectual efforts to keep up our’s website value.

Are You Guest Blogging For Links? Be Safe, Nofollow The Links

Some years ago Matt Cutts answered another question, what is Google’s view of guest blogging links. Guest blogging links are similar to paid links. The bloggers want to have the advantages of guest posts. They consider adding some links to their own resources and generally from author bio. But it’s supposed to be violated Google’s guidelines. Because the links will be added expecting higher ranking in search engines.
When guest posting, most of the bloggers add links being hopeful of getting ranked to the linked page. These links behave like paid links as rank boosters. As a result, these are going to be treated just like the paid links. In solution to shake off paid links and guest blogging links relevance, Matt Cutts advised to nofollow these links. However, these won’t pass link juice, but promotional nofollow links from high authoritative sites will be much effective.
When Guest Blogging Would Be Appreciated Even With Followed Links
It is true that guest blogging for links are no longer effective, but not in all conditions. If you are a highly recommended writer who can write flawless contents, guest posting is exactly for you. Matt Cutts had written the appearance in order to make everyone sincere about guest blogging. This attempt is extending it’s limit with such spammy unnatural contents. Many people are turning this operation into a business providing guest blogging services. Some are also using spun articles which are unreadable. Mainly for them, he advised to stay out of it.
However, if you really realize that you would be guest blogging with such amazing contents, you are mostly welcomed. Matt Cutts also clarified all confusions about it:

It seems like most people are getting the spirit of what I was trying to say, but I’ll add a bit more context. I’m not trying to throw the baby out with the bath water. There are still many good reasons to do some guest blogging (exposure, branding, increased reach, community, etc.). Those reasons existed way before Google and they’ll continue into the future. And there are absolutely some fantastic, high-quality guest bloggers out there.
These few lines explains how potential it was before and how it will be treated in the future. So, there will be nothing to worry if you are working on quality. A quality guest posts could obviously link to related resources and there is not required any nofollow attribute. Just make sure the links add value to the post. Please bear in mind, he recommends blogs like Boing Boing where most of the bloggers are guests. Do you know why? Because there exists only high quality writings by appreciating writers.

Time to Guest Post for Branding and Exposure: How to Leverage It

We have entered into a brand new year where we have to focus on brand new strategies. Already Matt Cutts prediction has created sensational changes in our minds. Sometimes we ask each other if SEO is really dead. I think old SEO strategies are dead. Now it’s time to focus on branding. Google loved sites focusing on branding and will be doing as well. You won’t believe, but do you know guest blogging is the superior way to make brand awareness!
Matt Cutts prediction indicates that alleviate guest blogging for links, focus on branding and exposure. Yes, that is now what we have to consider. But another question is how to optimize guest posts for especially branding. That is not so hard, we have to make these major changes in our habits:
Make Contents Outstanding

Contents are everything of a guest post. It has the highest priority that could prove all wrong. Google is exactly looking for quality contents. As an example, if you have posted a tremendous content on a site without much authority, links from there would be still counted as authoritative. So the first and foremost recommendation is very high quality compelling contents. Although we should practice to guest post on popular blogs with such remarkable contents.
Make Links Naturally
Naturality which is the major term of SEO should be implemented as well. If you are looking for links to your own posts, make sure you don’t loss naturally on it. If your linked resource is also informative which is sure to add value, you can obviously make it happen. But over optimized keyword links would be the main obstructions what we have to prevent a must. Mix some internal and external links to make the post stable to search engines.
Guest Post From Separated Author Profile
In order to maintain the guest blogging quality, it is necessary to have a separated author profile. Because it is supposed to be more natural. If the guest post is published from the admin’s account, there would be risky for you. Because the post will be showing written by a person and the actual writer will be another person. So, that doesn’t make sense. So if you have a blog where you allow guest posting, ensure posts are published with the actual author name, and ensure you have Google authorship added on your blog. You can take advantage of Jetpack plugin to integrate Google authorship.
Write Appealing Author BIO
Author bio is the place where you should add your personal contents. But that area doesn’t mean to have fulfilled with only links and promotions. Author bio is the place where you have to add a fruitful description of your own. As a reward, you can add a link to your website anchored with brand name or website name. Using keyword in it could be considered as over optimization.
Link To Your Social Profiles
A legal author would definitely link to his social profiles. Social profiles not only help for personal branding, but also verify an author’s existence. Same to visitors, the search engines could have a look at their social profiles to verify if the person is legal or not. So, that should be done in order to make crawlers believe on the authors. More over, as a reader I would like to see a blog post from a real-person rather than just another bot profile.
Verify Google Authorship Markup
Google authorship markup demonstrates if the author is on Google+ database or not. It is another way to build trust. Google really gives priority to the pages verified with Google authorship markups. So, if you could take advantage of this markup, the post will be looked more stable to the search engines. That is why we should do in order to get the value.
Conclusion of Guest Blogging in 2014:
Now in the SEO industry, there is a rumor that SEO is dead, guest blogging is dead. But I don’t agree with their opinions. Because SEO is not dead and it will never be. Google and other search engines have intention to filter out spam results to show most relevant one. And that’s why all these trends are going on. I will advise, before doing any SEO, just ask yourself what is looking more natural. Think what you would appreciate if you were Matt Cutts. I think you will get your answers. So, guest blogging is something like this. Maintain natural quality in guest blogging and there will be no obstacle at all.

Page Layout Algo : Too Many Ads Above Fold Bad for SEO [Update]

On 6th February 2014, Google rolled out another refresh of Page layout algo targeting websites which is still showing too many ads above the fold section and have too little or almost no content at the above fold. If you are seeing a drop in your search engine traffic after 6th Feb 14, you should check if your website have too many ads. If yes, you should work on placing the ads below fold. Do read the complete post to learn how you can optimise your website to avoid too many ads alto penalty. Here is the official tweet from Matt Cutts confirming new refresh in the algorithm:
https://twitter.com/mattcutts/statuses/432940645200588800
Page layout algo is the term given by Google search team for the new tweak they added in their search engine algo today. We all know that, too many advertisements above the fold or when you have to scroll down a lot to see the content or when content is full of advertisement and you find it hard to see the real content, it’s a bad user experience. Google new Page layout algo, will lower down the ranking of site which doesn’t give good user experience in the term of ad placement.

Page Layout Algo Page Layout Algo : Too Many Ads Above Fold Bad for SEO [Update]

As Added by Matt Cutts in an official Blog post today:
This algorithmic change noticeably affects less than 1% of searches globally. That means that in less than one in 100 searches, a typical user might notice a reordering of results on the search page. If you believe that your website has been affected by the page layout algorithm change, consider how your web pages use the area above-the-fold and whether the content on the page is obscured or otherwise hard for users to discern quickly.
As it’s a small tweak but I believe it’s going to affect websites which is using too many advertisements above the fold or content falls down below the fold. Though, actual data will come in upcoming days when we will see what ad placement works best and what ad placement can lower down your site ranking. Even after Panda update last year, on Webmaster forum many SEO expert suggested to lower down the ads above the fold to recover from Google panda. But, an official post now confirmed the same.

How to Test your site against Page Layout Algo:

You can use Google Browser Size tool to see if your site content is coming below the fold or above the fold. You can always tweak your theme and make changes or you can wait for some day and see if your ranking or traffic drops. If it does, it’s high time to tweak your theme and make It more reader friendly. You can learn more about browser size tool here.
When I check ShoutMeLoud using this tool, I feel it might not fit the best ad guideline suggested by this new algo, but for now I’m planning to wait and watch for any change, as  I already replaced major 350 ad box above post with 468*60 and it makes post look more cleaner. Though, I might get rid of 728*90 ad @header in coming days, but before that I will love to see any change in traffic.

Here is a video by Matt Cutts, in which he shared about how much ad and content should be above the fold. Forward the video to 20.00t minutes to see his point on Ads above the fold:
Well, it’s a good idea to provide better user experience, but at the same time there is no denying the fact that ad placed above the fold perform much better and pays well.
In case, if your site get penalized due to Too many ads above the fold, you can make changes and wait for Google bot to re-crawl your site with less ads and your penalty will be removed. It’s similar as last year back to back panda updates, where some time we won and some time we lost. Over all, I’m happy with panda and these new SEO quality guidelines Google is putting up for everyone to create a better internet experience. As mentioned by Matt Cutts, this new algo change will impact not more than 1% of search results, which is not lot but might be epic for many Bloggers who are running too many ads above the post. One thing, which Google didn’t made it clear about the Blogs running ads between the blog posts. I have noticed many premium blogs with premium AdSense account, are running ads in between blog post and it’s always a bad user experience for me.
You might like to see my earlier post on clever ad placement ideas and don’t forget to ignore my third suggestion.

Do you think Google will penalize such pages too? What’s your opinion about new Page layout Algo?

Help Google Spam Report Team by Reporting Scraper Sites

Months back Google rolled out improve algo to fight against Scraper site and later Google panda rolled out, instead of eliminating scrapper sites from Internet, Panda increased the ranking of many scrapper site and even original content was outranked by such scrapper site. Bloggers like me worked day and night to report such posts to Google DMCA & spam report team but in vain, since the system is automated, you might end up reporting hundred such pages every day but next day you will find another hundred such posts. Later on I changed my blogs feed to partial feed to help Google understand which is original content and also to avoid duplicate content penalty.
Anyways, if you are like me who have been facing issues with such spam sites, here is a news which might interest you. Google is working on understanding the scrapper sites better so that they can improve their search engine Algorithm to fight against them. And for the same reasons they are asking webmasters and bloggers to help them by reporting such sites using a form. (Link below).

This is not the same as reporting DMCA but helping Google to understand which sites are content scrapping site will help Google to modify their algorithm to automatically remove such spam sites from search results.
Contentscrapper thumb Help Google Spam Report Team by Reporting Scraper Sites
In case if you are not aware of what scrapper site is, it’s a spam site which is created for either creating revenue, outrank original site or improve ranking of other sites by linking to other sites. Reason could be anyone but by the end it’s the original author who faces the consequences.
Personally, in last 4 months I have reported over 1500+ such links to Google web spam team and filed a DMCA using Google DMCA form and seems like there is no end to it. This news actually given me a sign of relief and I hope in near future, I expect such spammy sites to die. Google should also implement a way, so that anyone can report the complete spam domain, instead of reporting individual posts which is a tedious job.
If you are a blogger, you can always find duplicate content using any of these 10 tools and fill out this form and help Google to understand why content scrapper sites are ranking better. Filling out form is easy, simply search in Google using your title or a line from any of your  last 3-4 posts, put the search term you used and add original link and the scraper site link. (Link of the page where your content is copied). Hit back button and similarly report other pages too.  For every domain which copied your post, do it atleast once.

I hope to see Google working on new algo soon and removed all such content scrapper sites from Web index. This will directly helps in increasing search engine traffic to your site and also increase in revenue. Anyways, for now go ahead and fill out the form.
Are you also a victim of content scrapper site? What actions have you taken till now to fight against them?
